The Science of Sleep

Do you ever just want to, you know, feel something when watching a movie? If you're looking to get your sap on this weekend, we've shortlisted some of the best romance flicks Australian streaming services have to offer.

We're guessing you've already watched The Notebook ten times, so we've picked our brains for some deep cuts that cut deep. Read on for our current favourite love story choices from Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime Video, and SBS On Demand. Just don't forget the tissues, your tub of ice cream, or a strategically placed onion to blame.

The Science of Sleep

If you like your rom-coms with a healthy side of surrealism, The Science of Sleep is the flick for you. It follows the plight of the fanciful Stéphane, a young man who has trouble separating his dreams from reality, and puts one hell of a twist on the tried and true girl-next-door storyline of old. Oh, and half the sets are literally made of cardboard.

Available on: SBS On Demand

Her

Starring Joaquin Phoenix and the voice of Scarlett Johansson, Her tells the tale of a man who falls helplessly in love with his Siri-like digital assistant. Weirdo. It's a pretty great film though, especially if you like your romance tinged with cringe and sci-fi.

Available on: Netflix

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is quite possibly the greatest love story ever told. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love, boy has to defeat girl's seven evil exes. What could be more relatable, or romantic?! Based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley and directed by Edgard Wright of Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver fame, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a totally adorable, laugh out loud, feast the for the eyes.

Available on: Amazon Prime Video

Submarine

The directorial debut of Richard Ayoade (best known for his role as Moss in The IT Crowd), Submarine is the story of an awkward teenage boy's first relationship. Despite our hero’s pursuit of his hormonal urges, Submarine is a coming of age film with a lot of heart and manages to avoid the crassness of its American contemporaries. If you're a fan of Wes Anderson or French New Wave, Submarine will very much be your thing.

Available on: Stan
