Melbourne switches on free Wi-Fi across CBD

Australia's coffee capital, Melbourne, has switched on what's being called the country's fastest free Wi-Fi Network. Dubbed VicFreeWiFi, the service is currently usable within all Melbourne CBD train stations, the Bourke St Mall, Queen Victoria Market, and South Wharf Promenade at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. More access points across Melbourne's CBD will be switched on over the coming months.

"Whether visitors are coming into town to go shopping, eat in Melbourne’s famous laneways or head to the AFL Grand Final this long weekend, they’ll all be able to access and enjoy the fastest free Wi-Fi in the country," said Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Philip Dalidakis.

VicFreeWiFi was launched in Bendingo and Ballart in December last year. Once the Melbourne CND portion of the network is complete, the VicFreeWiFi service will be Australia’s largest free public Wi-Fi network, covering an area of 600 square kilometres (across the three cities).

VicFreeWiFi is free to use, does not require users to register or sign-up, and is free from advertising. The network allows anyone to use up to 250MB per device, per day.

The below map details current and future access points across Melbourne, Bendigo, and Ballarat.
