NBN has revealed the first 200,000 or so premises set to get their National Broadband Network connections delivered via up-and-coming Fibre-to-the-Curb technology.
FTTC, or Fibre-to-the-Curb, is the latest acronym NBN acronym you need to know. Also referred to as FTTdp (Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point) and FTTK (Fibre-to-the-Kerb), the technology is ostensibly a mix of Fibre-to-the-Premise and Fibre-to-the-Node. Rather than taking fibre to a central node in a neighbourhood, fibre is laid directly to a property's kerb. The final connection from the kerb to your house is made with the existing copper phone line.
Not only does this facilitate faster download speeds, it would make it cheaper for you to get a direct fibre connection to your house or business if you ever want to upgrade.
NBN announced its intentions to use FTTC technology around the end of last year, and it's now laid out a list of regions where work is expected to commence between June and December. Services delivered over FTTC connections are scheduled to go on sale before the middle of 2018.
The first wave of the FTTC rollout covers around 200,000 premises, with the majority located in New South Wales And Victoria. NBN expects more than one million homes and businesses to connect to the National Broadband Network via FTTC when the build is finished.
The first regions set to get FTTC connections are as follows:
