HTC may release a smartwatch by Christmas

The Samsung Galaxy Gear we reviewed in late 2013.

2014 is gearing up to be the year of wearable devices. Smartwatches are all the rage for manufacturers, despite early versions showing poor public adoption, and this year’s CES was so wearable-centric that it was difficult to find info on anything else.

It should come as no surprise then that Cher Wang, co-founder of HTC, has started talking about wearable tech.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Wang is quoted as saying “Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems… these are customer-centric problems”.

The article goes on to state that Wang claimed a wearable device will be available by this coming Christmas season.

Everything helps

HTC isn’t in a good way at the moment. The HTC One may have been a fantastic device, and it may even represent the beginning of a new age where HTC finally ‘gets it’ in terms of premium smartphone design, but it may also be too late.

Last year HTC lost a lot of market share to Lenovo and LG. Sales dropped by 30% and market penetration of the HTC One was hardly fantastic. HTC needs every little bit of help it can get at this point.

With that in mind, it would be easy for HTC to ‘pull a Samsung’ and release some kind of smartwatch way before it was ready for public sale (we’re looking at you, Galaxy Gear), but as Wang stated the Taiwanese company has been holding off while it works the kinks out.

Alternatively, that could just be an excuse as to why HTC is so far behind in the smartwatch planning phase.
