Preorder the LG G3 and get a free G Pad tablet from Optus, but you need to be quick.

21 July 2014

Optus has today started taking preorders for the LG G3, a phone that is being heralded by many as the best release thus far in 2014. Even better, the first 100 Optus customers to pre-order the phone will get an LG G Pad 8.3 tablet (valued at AU$399) plus a wireless charging dock (AU$69) totally free.

The bonus tablet offer is only available for those that sign up online and only for 12 or 24 month contract subscribers.

Despite its already-glowing reputation, the G3 is a surprisingly affordable device. At just $5 per month on the $60 plan with 2GB of data, the plan plus the phone comes to a minimum of $1560 over 24 months. Alternatively, the Samsung Galaxy S5, a very similar phone in many respects, will cost you $9 per month on the same plan or $1656 over the two year contract, which is almost $100 more when all is said and done.

Compare that to the iPhone 5s 16GB model, which is a full $11 per month on the $60 plan, and the difference is even more jarring; $144 in total.

Alternatively, you can pick an LG G3 up for $696 outright and go for an Optus SIM-only plan. On SIM-Only, the $60 2GB plan falls to just $45 per month. That does mean you’d end up paying quite a bit more in the long run ($1776 compared to $1560 over 2 years), but you wouldn’t be tied-in to any long-term contracts and could switch plans any time you wanted. You also wouldn't get the LG G Pad and charging dock if you took this route.

About the G3

The LG G3 has a 5.5 inch quad-HD (QHD) display with a resolution of 2560x1440. That’s significantly higher than the 1080x1920 (1080p) panels found in the other current flagship devices like the Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 or Sony Xperia Z2. Whether or not a phone actually needs this level of detail is still yet to be decided upon by the greater public, but at the very least it gives you bragging rights over your friends.

Even better, the bezels around the screen itself a super-thin, giving the G3 a beautiful and premium look that leaves other phones looking a little like last-year’s fare in comparison.

The 13MP camera comes complete with a laser autofocus system that reportedly speeds up focus acquisition significantly. This means faster photos and an easier time getting everything to look just right.

Other than that there’s a large 3000mAh battery, quad-core 2.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board memory with a microSD slot for expanding that a further 128GB.
