Aussies now have the option to filter by home-grown apps in the app store. The section is reportedly available world-wide, leading to speculation that this could be a limited-time addition for either traffic testing or region-based advertising. The web address of the filtered list also ends in “/promotion_30000e7_aussieapps”, which is another identifier that this is not a permanent change.
If Google’s aim is to test whether or not this is useful then the answer is “yes”. Many of the top options are useful apps for Aussies like Foxtel Guide, ABC, ABC Radio, TripView, Sydney Food Truck and a slew of sport and team-specific apps.
We’re happy to see one of our personal favourites – Pocket Casts by shiftyjelly – take the top spot.
Interestingly, the home-grown section has a pretty limited selection of 51 apps and you can’t edit regular searches to only display Aussie content. If you could it would make searching for things like TV guides, restaurant apps or transport timetables much easier.
Whether or not this promotion is long-lasting we hope it’s a forerunner for a broader implementation of geo-based searches in the Google Play store. It’d be a useful addition no matter what your location and it’s a great way to allow folks to support local developers.
