Motorola Moto 360 proves that style is paramount

Motorola’s Moto 360 has cracked a major component of the wearable tech market: style. In terms of reaching consumers, how a wearable device looks is actually more important than what it does. Getting someone to wear something ugly that does useful things takes some serious convincing, but people willingly make sacrifices for fashion every day.

The Moto 360 is by far the classiest wearable device we’ve seen yet and it’s all thanks to the circular display. Other Smartwatches look like a cheap digital watch at a glance. Add to that they’re bulky and often uncomfortable. A round display ditches the awkward corners, while cutting a more attractive and familiar figure.

It’s an incredibly perceptive design that leaves us wondering why anyone hadn’t done it before. Expect this to be a turning point in the smartwatch market. Moving forward we’ll definitely start seeing a lot more round-faced smartwatches hit the market.

There’s a reason people still wear analogue watches

Ask any time-keeping enthusiast and they’ll tell you that the cheapest digital watch keeps better time than the most expertly-crafted Swiss analogue. Despite this, digital watches have all but vanished while analogues are still commonplace. Add to that the expense of buying a device purely to tell you the time, especially when you already have it in your pocket, and you’re left with one explanation: it’s all about the look.

Even though watches can be useful it’s clear that fashion is a huge driving factor. Digital watches died off because they lacked fashion status. So why have smartwatches been mirroring their look?

Turning to the analogue watch for design tips makes sense. It’s an established look with a pre-existing demand. You don’t need to convince anyone to wear something alien by showing them all its bells and whistles. If you make it familiar and pretty enough, people’s own desire to look fashionable will do the work for you. All Motorola has done is add a little extra functionality to an already well-loved form factor. Brilliant and simple.

It’s incredible to see how far smartwatches have come in just the last six months. We can’t wait to see what’s in store over the next year or two.
